Dunnottar School aspires to be a leading provider in the care, education and training of children and young adults with developmental disabilities thus helping them achieve their fullest potential and take their place in society.
Its mission is to provide comprehensive and effective services for our students in all areas of development, to advocate for their inclusion in society and to improve quality of life.
The main school is divided into three sections.
Foundation Department
Students in this program range from age 5 to 14 years. Our students receive instruction in all developmental skills i.e. language skills, gross and fine motor, self -help skills and cognitive skills. This department consists of three classrooms, four teachers and two teachers ‘aides.
Autism Department
Students in this program range from age 5 to 15 years. These students acquire instruction in all developmental skills i.e. social, language, sensory play, self-help, motor and cognitive skills. This department consists of three classrooms, five teachers and one teacher’s aide.
Pre-Vocational and Life Skills Department
This department has two aspects; it provides opportunities for older students with more severe developmental difficulties, as well as introduces students to all pre-vocational skills offered at the school. Learning in this department is centered on daily living skills which are useful in the home and community, introduction to skills training, recreational and social skills. This department consists of three classrooms, five teachers and one teachers’ aide.
Music theory and the playing of music in a band is offered to all the children at the school. They are encouraged to participate in the bands – Junior and Main – and ultimately to perform at the hotels, cruise ships and in house.
